TAFE SA offers Restricted Electrical short course
TAFE SA’s Restricted Electrical short course is providing opportunities for upskilling as well as ensuring plumbers are compliant with legislation. Restricted – Disconnection/Reconnection of Fixed Wired Low Voltage Water Heaters – Skillset (UEESS00096) offers nationally accredited training and is open to those with a Certificate III in plumbing or higher qualification.
TAFE SA electrical lecturer Chris Jarrett said plumbers completing the water heater training would have the skills and knowledge required to obtain a National Restricted Electrical Licence (NREL) from Consumer Business Services (CBS). “This training enables plumbers to apply for the NREL, which means they can legitimately disconnect and reconnect from the power grid,” Chris said. “It’s really
important that people carrying out this work are well trained and appropriately licensed, you need to be compliant. Additionally, there are safety risks as there are with all aspects of electrical work. There’s a lot of steps in the process and we teach with an emphasis on the highest standard of safety.”
The Disconnect/Reconnect short course covers different connection types and how the electrical system works, the safe isolation of electrical supplies and the use of metering equipment. By completion, participants will know how to identify supply arrangements, follow isolation procedures, select and use testing and measuring devices, and terminate and connect cables. Training is conducted at TAFE SA’s state-of-the-art Tonsley Campus and students work on equipment that is wired into the grid, ensuring their learning experience is practical and relevant. “It’s a training environment but participants are working on real-life equipment and realistic scenarios,” Chris said.
After the training, students will be able to work on three-phase and single-phase hot water systems, hardwired to an electrical installation. The course involves approximately 16 hours of online study prior to four days of on-campus training and assessment.
The next short course will be at Tonsley Campus, 1284 South Rd, Clovelly Park, from Tuesday to Friday, July 16-19. The cost is $1500 or $1180 for CITB members and there is a $200 discount for current MPA members. For more information, visit https://www.tafesa.edu.au/shortcourses
