Welcome to the July/August 2019 Plumbing SA Issue
Plumbers have had enough!
Last edition was on of our best magazines that had a massive impact and some very good feedback, due to the Plumbers Have Had Enough article. The fact that builders continue to get away with poor business practices proves there is a massive education and training issue that needs addressing. All subcontractors are now put on notice to ensure checks and balances are 100% necessary and if rumours are being heard – please take notice. MPA will be looking at ways to continually update and educate members in ways to ensure cashflow is maintained in all dealings. When there are training sessions on offer it is important that members embrace those opportunities, even if it is something that you may not experience - information = knowledge = power. Our objective is to protect our members.
Security of Payment Information Session
A big thank you to Sam Burford and Digby Luckhurst – Smith from Lynch Meyer Lawyers for conducting the information sessions and from the Office of the Small Business Commissioner for funding the training program. We have received some outstanding feedback from the sessions and instantly members have gained financial benefits from attending. For members who have not been able to attend, there will be a recorded version of the presentation on our website. We will inform members once that has been completed.
Congratulations to Bill Watson
Plumbing Industry Stalwart Appointed with Honours
Bill Watson, Master Plumbers’ Association of Queensland (MPAQ) Life Member and Stalwart, was appointed in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List as a Member (AM) of the Order of Australia (General Division) for his services to the plumbing industry. Bill has been awarded this prestigious honour for his commitment and dedication to the plumbing industry. He has contributed over 45 years to the trade in leadership roles as an apprentice, employee, employer, business operator, industry regulatory representative, government board appointee, and accredited trainer. Bill has contributed not just at a state level but also at a national level through his participation on Master Plumbers
Australia and New Zealand, of which he is currently a director. Bill is also currently a councillor of MPAQ. Having gained a broad spectrum of expertise across the trade, Bill has been responsible for steering and implementing change for a number of key industry issues. Kent Vickers, President of MPAQ, said “we are extremely proud of Bill for his dedication and contribution to our trade, and this award is very well deserved”. Bill has provided extensive past and present input into vocational education and training in addressing skill needs for the future – providing industry input to committees and workshops for the curriculum of pre-vocational and apprenticeship courses for the plumbing, drainage and gas fitting industry.
